MisOcc
OFW dependents receive OWWA Scholarships
by Karl Imanoel Aoanan
The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) has given OFW dependents
from Misamis Occidental six slots out of the 19 allotted for Region
10.
This
scholarship grant is in conjunction with the Skills-for-Employment Scholarship
Program (SESP) of OWWA, and the Technical Education and Skills Development
Authority (TESDA).
Four
slots for vocational education, with each of the grantees receiving
P7,250 for the Scholarship. On the other hand, two slots for a one-year
technical course with grants amounting of P14,500 to each grantee are
up for grabs.
These
six scholarship grantees will be chosen based on the criteria and eligibility
requirements of being a beneficiary or dependent of an OWWA-Member,
a high school graduate, and a Filipino citizen. They have also passed
the qualifying examination of the scholarship program, and has submitted
and passed the competency assessment and certification administered
by TESDA, and also has passed the TESDA qualifying examination or the
Multiple Aptitude Battery Test or MABT on the program of choice of the
grantee.
The
SESP consists of six-month vocational or one-year technical programs
offered to land-based or sea-based OFW-Members or their beneficiaries
or dependents in coordination with TESDA. This program is in the form
of financial assistance. Tuition and other fees are paid directly to
the school, and the remaining amount from financial assistance is released
to the scholar at the end of the program upon submission of the competency
assessment and certification of course completion.
Furthermore,
two more OFW dependents qualified for the Four-year Baccalaureate Scholarship
Program of OWWA starting this coming school year. They are Ethel Faith
Baygan of Oroquieta City, and Jellie Ann Sumpay from Ozamiz City. Baygan
will be granted the Congressional Migrant Worker’s Scholarship
Program, while Sumpay got the Educational for Development Scholarship
Program. Both will receive P30,000 per semester worth of grants covering
tuition and other fees, uniform and book allowances, and other emergency
expenses. Baygan will have to take Science and Technology related course,
while Sumpay will be allowed to take any of her preferred course.
